UFO - OJOS : CRASH - TEST
L’usine Claessens à Waregem apprête une grande variété de toiles et d’enduits destinée aux peintres. C’est en voyant son catalogue que nous avons pensé construire notre exposition sous la forme d’un « crash-test » en appliquant sur tout l’éventail d’échantillons un même motif propre à chacun. La rencontre sensible dudit motif avec chacun des supports a conduit à des réponses ouvrant et altérant la pure répétition. UFO - OJOS : CRASH - TEST renvoie à un objet insaisissable, appelé par défaut UFO (Ovni) pour Robert Suermondt et OJOS (Yeux) pour Emilio López-Menchero. Chaque essai constitue un test de « résistance » de la peinture, à savoir la rencontre du pinceau contre la toile, l’illusion de profondeur contre la permanence du plan. Il nous a plu, dans notre réponse d’artistes visant directement les produits des ateliers Claessens, de faire appel, par le titre, à une scientificité à l’oeuvre, du moins une prétendue objectivité du test, pour teinter l’expérience et l’ouvrir à la polysémie à laquelle invite sa dénomination.

UFO - OJOS : CRASH - TEST
De fabriek van Claessens in Waregem produceert een grote verscheidenheid aan doeken en ondergronden voor schilders. Bladerend door de catalogus kregen we het idee voor een tentoonstelling in de vorm van een crashtest, waarin elk van ons steeds eenzelfde motief toepaste op alle stalen uit de complete lijn van producten. Het sensitieve contact tussen dit motief en de verschillende ondergronden resulteerde in reacties die de simpele herhaling openbraken en veranderden. UFO - OJOS : CRASH - TEST verwijst naar een ongrijpbaar object, bij gebrek aan beter aangeduid als UFO, voor Robert Suermondt en OJOS (ogen) voor Emilio López-Menchero. Elke poging is een test van de ‘weerstand’ van het schilderen : het contact tussen de kwast en het doek ; de illusie van diepte tegenover de bestendigheid van het platte vlak. Als kunstenaars die zich rechtstreeks op de producten van de Claessensfabriek richten bevalt het ons om te appelleren aan een wetenschappelijkheid – althans een vermeende objectiviteit van de test – waarbij de ervaring wordt gekleurd en opengesteld voor de polysemie die de titel overbrengt.

UFO - OJOS : CRASH - TEST
The Claessens factory in Waregem prepares a wide variety of canvases and coatings for painters. It was by viewing its catalog that we thought of building our exhibition in the form of a “crash-test” in which each of us applied the same specific motif to the entire range of samples. The sensitive encounter of said motif with each of the bases has led to responses that opened up and altered the simple repetition. UFO - OJOS : CRASH - TEST refers to an ungraspable object, called by default UFO for Robert Suermondt and OJOS (eyes) for Emilio López-Menchero. Each attempt constitutes a test of the “resistance” of painting, namely the meeting of the brush against the canvas, the illusion of depth versus the permanence of a flat surface. As artists, in our respons aimed directly at the products of the Claessens factory, we enjoyed appealing to a scientificity at work, at least an alleged objectivity of the test, coloring the experience and opening it to a polysemy conveyed by the title.
